What Car Would Impress Your Mother?

As most of you know, I replaced my 257,000 mile Rio with a newish CUV. Now, it just so happens that part of my choice to purchase it over the Durango was that it was everything my mom had been considering to replace her Camry (Jeep, blue, buttons on the steering wheel). Though it was everything I wanted, the fact that I knew my mother would be excited and approve of the purchase really made it the obvious choice.

Kinja'd!!!

Her reaction when I pulled up in the driveway was awesome! She even did the “look back” twice before making it back into the house. She didnt even ask how much it cost until I showed her the flashlight in the back. Love that little lady.

So I wanted to ask, if you bought a vehicle for yourself, what vehicle would impress your mother?

*Side note, by buying the CUV, she now has to buy the Cadillac CTS or ATS she has always wanted or a Tacoma (her and I both say you must have a sedan as the primary car and all other vehicles must be a different body style). She was really into the Cherokee Trailhawk she test drove, but she would never take that thing off road, she just liked UConnect and the “Hawk” part of the name. Personally I thought the entire Cherokee line was a poor value and was unimpressed (at those price points). She also loves anything that says “Sport” regardless of equipment.

The hardest thing for me is that my mom thinks convertibles are “girly.” Problem is I’m really planning on a manual Boxster as my sports car, and she still sees manuals as the equivalent of buying a car without an A/C or a bumper. I’m not looking forward to validating that purchase.

Literally nothing. The facts she knows about about her current DD of going on 8 years are:

-It’s silver

-It’s a Jeep

You’d be hard pressed to even get the model name out of her.

This, of course, is the same woman who used to DD an ‘85 Grand National. Go figure.

She also loves my Mazda3 hatchback.

She was never a fan of the Fiero though. Thought it was a death trap (to which I always replied that it was one of the safest 30-year-old cars money could buy). She also hated driving it because it’s too low, rides rough, and doesn’t have power steering.

Overall, our tastes are similar and I think she’d love just about anything I brought home as long as it was a smart financial decision.

When I first showed my mom an E60, I had to explain to her how controversial it was. I didn’t tell her it was the the goddamn V8. The second E60 is even more invisible to her. When I picked her up at the airport last month, she told me there were so many dark grey cars that she had no idea which one I was.

I guess that says something.

According to Wikipedia, it’s the Volvo 700-series wagon. But Wikipedia.

What I do know is that the Fiero had five-star front and side crash-test ratings. Today’s tests are harsher and cars are safer, but a Fiero is as safe as, or safer than, anything else of the same vintage.

It would need to be a CUV, SUV or minivan that sits up high, is new (airbags, safety gizmos and structure, etc.), and has features that she’s gotten used to - she tends to stick to what she knows, which complicated the search for a new CUV/SUV to replace her old minivan a couple of years ago.

That’s really not my bag - I’d much prefer to buy a lower car like a Miata, a BRZ, or a Mustang. Not much in the way of ground clearance or size. I’d also like to get my M license at some point, and I’m pretty sure she loathes the thought of me riding a motorcycle.

My folks both chose to stick with manual transmissions as long as possible. Mom had to give up shifting when she blew out her knee in a skiing accident. I was the beneficiary of that accident because she sold me her 320i for whatever I could get for my stolen-then-crashed VW Rabbit Pickup.

Dad drove a manual E34 for 11 years before selling it to me and buying a crappy W210 E320 (which he still has 15 years later, and it still looks new). He looked at an E39 and thought it was just too similar to his E34 and switched to MB, something he regretted later on as the MB deteriorated.

If I should become suddenly stupid rich, I would like to repay them with replacement vehicles. Mom seems happy with her E320 wagon, so I’d probably like to get her the current model E-Class wagon, although I may have to put a limiter on it to keep her out of trouble with the law; she was getting speeding tickets in a VW Vanagon of all things and then bought a Mercedes with 2.5X the power - you can guess what happened. For dad, I’d like to find and have restored a late ‘80s E24, manual of course. But with the solar panels on the roof of their home, perhaps an i3 would be a better choice; he says that he’ll go for an electric car should something terminal happen to the W210, and considering how little it’s worth these days, it wouldn’t take much to total it.

I took her to my local CarMax to show her the C-Max Energi, Escape, and CX-5, and wanted to show her how she was getting screwed over by the Acura dealer she likes going to by showing her an Evoque.

Now instead of the CX-5 I wanted her to fall for (which she was happy with before I showed her the Evoque), she wants an Evoque, with the Doug DeMuro-friendly warranty a.k.a. MaxCare. The Evoques she wants are also almost twice the price of the nicest CX-5 Grand Touring models CarMax has.
